A bite plate can effectively align the jaw and address various dental issues. Common situations where a bite plate may be recommended include overbites or underbites, which occur when either the upper or lower jaw protrudes further than the other.

Bite plates can be either fixed or removable. Removable bite plates need to be worn continuously, only being taken out for cleaning, to prevent teeth from shifting and affecting the fit of the bite plate. Initially, using a bite plate may cause soreness and temporary difficulty with eating and speaking, but these discomforts typically subside within a few days.

The fixed bite plate will remain securely in your mouth for a period of 2-4 months. Its purpose is to protect your lower braces and teeth while also reducing the depth of your bite. This appliance facilitates growth in the back teeth and bone while maintaining stability in the front teeth. You will gradually adapt to eating with this appliance in place.

Bite plates operate in a straightforward way. Typically composed of acrylic and metal wires similar to retainers, they are positioned in the front of the mouth, forming a gentle platform behind the upper front teeth. This positioning helps reset the jaw’s resting position.

You should wear your bite plate all day, including during meals. The only times it should be removed are for brushing your teeth and engaging in activities like swimming or sports.

A fixed bite plate is affixed to the upper teeth. Food particles can sometimes become lodged under the plastic, and bending of the plate may cause it to shift slightly.

Not wearing the bite plate will delay your treatment progress. If you opt not to wear it or wear it only part-time, your braces treatment will not advance as planned, potentially prolonging the duration of treatment. It is crucial to follow your orthodontist’s instructions and wear the bite plate continuously, as directed.

Initially, wearing the bite plate may feel unusual due to muscle tension in your jaw. This tension is common, but the bite plate will help your jaw muscles to relax over time.

Clean your bite plate using only a toothbrush and toothpaste; avoid household cleaners and hot water. Hold it in your hand and gently brush the plastic and metal components. After cleaning, place it back in your mouth immediately and do not leave it at the sink.

Bite plates are commonly used for deep bites, where the upper teeth excessively overlap the lower teeth when biting down. They are often paired with braces to prevent you from biting down on the lower brackets. Additionally, bite plates are helpful if you grind or clench your teeth.

You should only remove your bite plate when brushing your teeth unless otherwise instructed. To keep it clean, hold it in your hand and brush it with toothpaste.

To adjust to your bite plate, practice reading aloud and take smaller bites when eating. Your back teeth will not touch, but with consistent use and your braces in place, the bite plate treatment is typically completed within 6-12 weeks.

Bite splints, also referred to as bite guards, TMJ guards, or occlusal splints, are similar to night guards in that they protect your teeth while you sleep. However, bite plates/splints also help guide your jaw into its most comfortable and natural position.
